Summer Term offers a condensed learning experience, compressing the typical 16-week Fall/Spring term into just 6 weeks. Here's what to expect:

  • Time Commitment: Students are expected to actively engage daily, dedicating approximately 20 hours per week to both online and offline activities for a 0.5 unit class (e.g., Personal Fitness or Biology B). For a 1.0 unit class or two 0.5 unit classes (e.g., Health and Personal Fitness or Advanced Algebra Y), the time commitment increases to approximately 40 hours per week.
  • Structure and Flexibility: Cobb Virtual Academy (CVA) classes are asynchronous, allowing students to work at times that suit them best. While there are no regular live sessions, each student will have a synchronous welcome meeting with their teacher. Optional in-person or virtual support is also available through CVA Learning Centers. Students may work ahead but must meet all deadlines listed in the Class Schedule. We recommend reviewing the full schedule at the start of the term to stay on track.

Online Registration and Orientation

After completing registration, you will receive a "Welcome to CVA" email including the steps to begin your class(es). You will be immediately enrolled in the Student Support class in CTLS. Access to your content class will begin the week of April 28th (or 1-2 business days after you register if you register after April 28th). You must complete the orientation unit in each of your classes to gain access to the course content. The orientation is in your content class.

Personal Fitness Heart Rate Monitor Information

CVA’s Summer Personal Fitness class is a fast-paced course that integrates fitness concepts with actual workouts. The CVA Personal Fitness class consists of 3 components: workouts (60% of grade), assignments and portfolio (30% of grade), and the final exam (10% of grade). Students may work ahead in the class to complete and submit written assignments. Workouts will begin the week of May 26th, but students can start their workouts earlier if they have equipment and complete their welcome phone call with their teacher. Due to the nature of the course and workout policy, students cannot “double up” on workouts in one day. Following the course objectives, students will work out consistently: 5 times a week for 5 consecutive weeks. Regardless of Summer plans, students must complete all workouts outlined in the class schedule. The workout charts and written assignments must be submitted by the due date.

CVA Personal Fitness students will have the option of using their own personal heart rate monitor or a program-issued one. Equipment distribution details for students using program-issued heart rate monitors will be sent to the students after registering. They must pick it up from Cobb Virtual Academy the assigned dates above. Course registration must be verified by the student's counselor and tuition payment received before equipment can be released to the student. If needed, students may set up an online meeting with their CVA teacher to learn how to use the program-issued equipment. With the guidance of their instructors, students will use the heart rate monitoring device to track and progress toward their physical goals. Personal devices must be able to upload screenshots of workouts that include the following information: Date/time of workout, duration of workout, heart rate data graph, and average heart rate.

Technical Requirements and Travel

CVA recommends using your CCSD-issued computer to complete assignments. CVA classes are delivered via the Cobb Teaching and Learning System (CTLS). CTLS is geo-restricted, so it is only accessible within the physical boundaries of the United States. Using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) while traveling outside the United States may help you access content that is geo-restricted.  Please see the bottom of the CVA FAQ page for more detailed information if you plan to travel during the Summer term.

Final Exams and EOCs

Students are required to take the final assessments as scheduled. There are no makeups for the final exams.

Final Exams: Online

All courses without EOCs have a final exam. Final exams may be submitted at any time during this timeframe:

Sunday, July 6 at 1 PM EDT - Tuesday, July 8 at 8 PM EDT

There are no makeups for the final exams.

EOC Tests: Face-to-Face (as required by Georgia)

The following CVA courses have a state-mandated EOC test:

  • Algebra I B & Y
  • American Literature B & Y
  • Biology and Honors Biology B & Y
  • US History B & Y

Testing dates and times:

EOC Tests are scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, July 8 - 9, 2025. Subject-specific testing schedule will be posted at the beginning of the Summer term.

Testing location for EOC Tests:

All testing will take place on the Cobb Horizon High School campus (1765 The Exchange, Atlanta, GA 30339).

Important Information:

  • Students must bring a photo ID. Options include the StudentVue app displaying student photo and CCSD information, driver’s permit, driver’s license, or passport.
  • Testing generally lasts about 2 hours.
  • CVA will send students and parents a reminder email prior to testing.  The email will include specific directions for finding the testing location.
  • Per district guidelines, students that do not take the EOC at the scheduled time will be issued a grade of zero and that grade will be calculated into the students' final course grade. Students will then need to contact their local school when they return in the Fall to schedule a make-up EOC exam. Once the make-up exam is completed and the score is returned from the State, the final course grade will be recalculated and posted to the student's transcript.
