The transition from elementary to middle school can be daunting for both students and parents. In this episode of The Inside Scoop, David Owen discusses what to expect from this big change with Mabry Middle School Counselor Lauren Oden and Cobb's Middle School Counseling Consultant Barbara Truluck.

One of the first differences students experience is the ability to choose some of their classes. While core academic subjects are assigned based on grading criteria, students get to select from various "connections" courses, such as robotics, study skills, and music. This small degree of choice gives students a sense of ownership and excitement while helping them make new friends.

Another major adjustment for incoming sixth graders is learning to use lockers. Each Cobb middle school provides lockers with built-in combinations, and teachers assist students in mastering their use during the first week. Additionally, cell phone and laptop usage follow District-wide policies, but implementation differs by school. The right amount of sleep, healthy nutrition, and limiting screen time at night are also crucial to students' well-being and academic success.

Extracurricular activities, including sports, play a significant role in middle school life. These programs provide an excellent way for students to develop skills, form friendships, and prepare for high school athletics. The counselors emphasize the importance of getting involved in these activities to ease the transition and create a sense of belonging.

While many students struggle with the increased academic expectations, middle school counselors play a crucial role in supporting students through this transition. It can be stressful, but with guidance and support, students gradually gain confidence and independence, making their middle school journey a rewarding growth experience.
